Danny Brown – The Hybrid Cutting Room Floor (2010)

I unfortunately fell back into my old habits and got overwhelmed from the thought of listening to the new album, Stardust, so I paused listening to music again.

1. 8 Mile: 6/10. Very chill but feels very intro. Makes me wonder how the rest will proceed.

2. Jus Chill: 7/10. Love the beat. Almost a love song? Sweet and real.

3. The Hybrid: 5/10. Interesting track but felt the lyrics were all over the place.

4. Dance Wit Me: 6/10. Head bobbing, funky. The mixing is a little out of sorts for me.

5. Demons and Angels: 5/10. Nothing really stood out to me in this track besides that Aeropostale line that made me laugh.

6. Hey!: 7/10. “And I’m checking ID’s, girl you won’t R. Kelly me.” Back to the vibe of the first tracks which I liked.

7. Metal Gear Solid: 6/10. Great aggression, he is spitting on this beat. Hilarious ad-libs.

8. 1 Step: 7/10. Love the sample and integration with his lyrics. Great flow and cadence.

9. Sleep: 7/10. Heartfelt and real, love the storytelling.

10. Danger Zone: 7/10. Loving the dark and moody vibes, perfect beat for this.

11. Tea Time: 5/10. Not very memorable.

12. God of War: 7/10. Another deeper, introspective story. Really digging these mellow tracks.

13. Stay On: 6/10. Pretty groovy. Like the sample on this one.

14. What I Talk: 6/10. This album is taking a mostly somber, conscious feel which is surprising. A lot of lived-in lyrics on chill beats.

15. 4 Get Yo Name: 5/10. Found the sample too overbearing.

16. Wake Up: 6/10. Uplifting, feel good track.

17. Rainbow: 3/10. Do not like the features at all. The beat is hard, could’ve been a banging outro.

Overall Mathematical Score: 5.9/10

Does the heart agree?: Yes, my highest rating on Danny Brown’s discography yet. I really like the tone this album took which is surprising as I feel it is the opposite of the Danny I knew of much later.

Song to listen to: 1 Step
