Danny Brown – Old (2013)

1. Side A [Old]: 6/10. Referencing the “old” Danny Brown, but the progression is so interesting. Cutty reference Easter egg.

2. The Return: 6/10. Dark and haunting. Fitting to have Freddie Gibbs on a song about being gangster.

3. 25 Bucks: 7/10. The beat is so full and encompassing. Love the story.

4. Wonderbread: 6/10. A similar concept to a track off another tape. This one is more like a fun jingle downplaying a crazy reality as a normal sight.

5. Gremlins: 4/10. Nothing stood out.

6. Dope Fiend Rental: 6/10. Pretty alpha track, kind of hard. Schoolboy’s rhyme scheme wasn’t my favourite from here lyrically.

7. Torture: 6/10. Pretty real track. Self-realization of where he is and where he wants to go.

8. Lonely: 5/10. Laid back vibe but nothing stands out.

9. Clean Up: 6/10. Introspective, relflective, encouraging.

10. Red 2 Go: 6/10. Pump up track, getting ready for Side B. Great placement.

11. Side B [Dope Song]: 8/10. So hard. Love his vocal changes and range on this.

12. Dubstep: 5/10. Vibing until Scrufizzer’s verse, ruined the flow for me. Would hit skip before his verse in the future.

13. Dip: 9/10. Beat is absolutely bonkers. Love the verses lyrically. Love the outro.

14. Smokin & Drinkin: 9/10. Again, beat is crazy. Love the droning/spiral/hypnotizing feel.

15. Break It [Go]: 7/10. Such a fun track, can’t help but to clap on beat.

16. Handstand: 6/10. Another fun song but the synth line in the back becomes an earworm in the wrong way for me.

17. Way Up Here: 6/10. Love the “Bitch, I’m way up here” line with the descending bass but it gets too repetitive. Ab Soul’s verse fits great.

18. Kush Coma: 8/10. Love the chorus, feels almost holy. The beat buildup in the verses and pre-chorus gives me anxiety in a bad way.

19. Float On: 6/10. Humble way to end the album. Love the call backs covering the album. Charli’s “Float on” does not fit for me.

Overall Mathematical Score: 6.4/10

Does the heart agree?: Yes. This is where my Danny discography knowledge ends. I have absolutely loved Side B for about 10 years, so I felt it would have scored higher. Side A is definitely less interesting to me.
