Danny Brown – XXX (Deluxe) (2011)

Conscious choice to skip “Hawaiian Snow” as I am skipping collab albums.

1. XXX: 6/10. We’re back to excitable Danny. Some fun references.

2. Die Like a Rockstart: 7/10. Loving the haunting/spooky beat. Great lyrics for the concept.

3. Pac Blood: 5/10. Chorus references are hilarious.

4. Radio Song: 5/10. Great message and play on the concept. Just not something I’d bop to.

5. Lie4: 7/10. Super fun lyrics. Very hype.

6. I Will: 6/10. The beat is glistening and twinkly. True to the concept.

7. Bruiser Brigade: 7/10. Song is hard. Love the vocal inflections and aggressiveness.

8. Detroit187: 4/10. Fun lyrics but the teasing nature made the flow and tone a little hard on my ears.

9. Monopoly: 6/10. Great hype beat. “In your baby mama crib, not flushing after I piss” is a standout.

10. Blunt After Blunt: 6/10. Again, loving the tone changes.

11. Outer Space: 6/10. He is really spitting. Hilarious lyrics.

12. Adderall Admiral: 4/10. Track feels pretty messy to me.

13. DNA: 6/10. First more laid back, chill track on the tape.

14. Nosebleeds: 5/10. Very interesting inclusion to this tape. Seems slightly out of place.

15. Party All the Time: 5/10. Is #13 a turning point of the album to a more chill side? Nice moody track.

16. EWNESW: 5/10. Nice homage track. Call and response not my thing on this one.

17. Fields: 5/10. Really paints a picture. Love the chorus.

18. Scrap or Die: 5/10. Beat is dirty. I like the concept and some lyrics made me laugh but I just feel this beat needed something else. Also, too long.

19. 30: 7/10. Lyrics are so hard. Amazing outro song. The lyrics are so real I could almost tear up at the end. But honestly, not a huge fan of the beat as the little guitar riff inserts throw me off.

20. Bassline: 4/10. I get it’s called bassline but it’s a little too empty for me.

21. Witit: 6/10. Fun track, fun silly lyrics. The beat can be kind of droning.

Overall Mathematical Score: 5.3/10

Does the heart agree?: No, honestly, it feels like it should score higher. The shift from the last albums to this one feels enormous. Danny feels like he has found a style and a voice.
