Danny Brown – Detroit State of Mind 2 (2008)

1. Last Donut: 5/10. Great flow to start off the tape.

2. Mash: 5/10. Amazing lyrics and flow on this one. Beat a little out of sync for me. He’s still talking about his cutty, which feels like an easter egg at this point, it’s been 3 mixtapes.

3. Cocaine Cowboy: 6/10. Hilarious lyrics on this one too. “More white than X-games.” I like this Madlib beat more.

4. 26 Inches: 5/10. Beat is slamming, but the lyrics are not standing out to me.

5. Everybody’s Gone: 6/10. Nice sorrowful piece, love the haunting sample on this one.

6. Freestyle: 4/10. Simple piece but I may be too simple to understand the lyrics and references.

7. U Luv: 5/10. Loving piece as per the title, a little vulnerable.

8. So Hood: 8/10. This is just my style, hard, fun lyrics. Verse 1 is so great.

9. Ghetto Bad: 4/10. Wasn’t totally feeling it but prefer the switch up in the second half, more vulnerable.

10. Waves: 6/10. Pretty impactful track. Interesting knowing this life story and that he has totally flourished.

11. Understanding: 4/10. Love this storytelling, but not a fan of the beat. A little ear-piercing.

12. Set: 5/10. Love his flow on this beat, great lyrics. Beat gives an uplifting feel to end of the tape.

Overall Mathematical Score: 5.3/10

Does the heart agree?: Yes. Short and sweet. This mixtape truly felt like a mixtape. His voice and style are becoming more clear.

Song to listen to: So Hood
